Smothers Theatre, Pepperdine University, Malibu, 24255 Pacific Coast Highway

The program opened with Variations from Paquita and closed with Melissa Barak’s new Concerto Italia. Other pieces included MeditationMasqueradeDances from Faust, and Nymphs (from The Sleeping Beauty). The youngest dancers appeared in Divertissements des Enfants (from Coppelia) and Capriccioso. Michelle Bachar’s lively jazz piece Sing, Sing, Sing closed out Act I.

The program featured excerpts from the great classical ballet Swan Lake, as well as Yvonne Mounsey’s own dynamic Classical Symphony. The youngest dancers appeared in Caprice Walker’s delightful ballet The Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra. Classical, neoclassical and jazz dance pieces were created or staged especially for our dancers by Sophie Monat, Melissa Barak, and Michelle Bachar.

The program consisted of Les SylphidesNymphs from Sleeping Beauty, Lyrica Blankfein in a variation from La Esmeralda,Flamenco by Assieh LaMora, Mozartiana,Vivaldi Concerto by Melissa Barak, two works by Yvonne Mounsey (Dances from “Faust,” Masquerade) and excerpts from Who Cares?, the ballet to songs of George Gershwin.
